Obituary for Sandra "Sande" J. Carruthers

PEORIA—Sandra J. “Sande” Carruthers, 77, of Peoria, passed away at 11 AM, Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at UnityPoint Health – Methodist.

Born August 10, 1940, in Peoria, Sande was a daughter of William “Bill” Sr. and Betty Fleming.
Sande is survived by her long time friend, Jerry Parr of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Robyn (Daniel) Appler of Oriskany, NY; two grandchildren Wesley and Emerson Appler; one sister, Sherry Hillman of Peoria; three brothers, Rick (Cathy) Dee of Four Seasons, MO, Ed (Becky) Fleming of Rome, William “Bill” (Debbie) Fleming of Rome; one sister-in-law, Beth Fleming of Rome; numerous nieces and nephews;

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jay Fleming.

Sande graduated from Bradley University in 1965 where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1962 and her Master of Science Degree in 1965.

She worked for District 150 as an Elementary and High School Teacher, starting her career at Head Start and teaching kindergarten at Lincoln Elementary School. She retired as an English Teacher at Peoria High School in 1994.

Sande was a member of the Peoria High School Alumni Association and served as the Executive Director from April, 1994 to April, 1995.

She was previously active with the Peoria Symphony, Creve Coeur Club, Corn Stock, Twin Tower Board, and the Deer Valley Education Foundation in Phoenix.

She enjoyed her “Friday nights with friends.” Cooking, entertaining and decorating were her passion. She was an avid Cubs fan and a devout Christian.

Sande was a member of First United Methodist Church where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2017 with the Rev. Dr. Timothy Ozment officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at The Wilton Mortuary, 2101 N. Knoxville Ave, Peoria, IL 61603. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.

Should family and friends desire, contributions may be given to the First United Methodist Church, 116 NE Perry Ave., Peoria, IL 61603 or George Washington Carver Community Center, 710 W. Percy Baker Jr. Ave., Peoria, IL 61605 (to benefit their youth programs)
