Obituary for Eleanor E. Wolfert

Eleanor E. (Eilers) Wolfert, age 95, of Peoria, passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria.

Eleanor was born on December 29, 1921 in Peoria to Otto and Sophie (Trautmann) Eilers. She married Arthur H. Wolfert, Jr.

Eleanor graduated from Manual High School in 1940, where she enjoyed singing in the a cappella choir. After graduation, she was lucky to find a job with the law firm of Hunter, Kavanagh & McLaughlin, later Kavanagh, Scully, Sudow, White & Frederick, until 1985. She then became a Judicial Assistant to Federal Judge William V. Altenberger, retiring in June of 1997. She was also a former member of the Association of Bankruptcy Judicial Assistants. She moved to Lutheran Hillside Village in 1995.

During World War II, there was a nurse’s shortage, so in order to help, Eleanor and a friend became Red Cross Nurse’s Aids and spent their spare time from work helping in the hospitals. In the early years, she learned how to sew from her mother and she made most of her and her daughter’s clothes, becoming an accomplished seamstress. In 1979 she started her hobby of making beautiful stained glass lamps and windows; making them mostly for her daughter.

Eleanor was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church on First Street in Peoria, where she was a member of the Luther League, and she loved singing in the choir.
Surviving are her daughter, Victoria (Gene) Tutwiler of Pennsylvania; two grandsons, Brent (Jennifer) Tutwiler and Bryan Tutwiler, both of Pennsylvania; three great-grandchildren, Merrit, Kailynn and Ashlee Tutwiler and one great-great-grandchild, Aisley Tutwiler. Also surviving are four nieces, Marilyn Bazeli, Ph.D., Janet Anderson, Emily Eilers, M.D. and Rhonda Reents. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Marguerite Weerts and Gertrude Reents; and one brother, Robert O. Eilers.

There will be no services. Interment will be at Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Hillside Village Foundation. Arrangements were handled through The Wilton Mortuary.
