Obituary for Edythe "Elaine" Barker

BLOOMINGTON – Edythe “Elaine” Barker, 92, of Bloomington, formerly of Peoria, died at 3:22 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2018, surrounded by family at OSF St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Bloomington.

Elaine was born on November 4, 1925, in Hiteman, IA, to William and Sophronia (Terrell) Howell. She married E. Carl Barker on May 9, 1946, in Hot Springs, AR; he preceded her in death on November 7, 1970.

She is also preceded in death by her parents; her son, Bill Barker; a brother, Bill Howell; and a sister, Lois Paboll.

Elaine is survived by one daughter, Carla (Michael) Thomas; five grandchildren, Derrick and Kevin Barker, Matthew (Jacki) Tracy, Shannon (Jim) Nailos, Matthew (Amber) Thomas; a special friend, Angela (Mike) Trask; five great-grandchildren, Zachery (fiancé, Alyssa Bayles) Werner, Dylan Tracy, Chase and Madison Nailos, and Anika Thomas; her siblings, Myrta Jean (Chuck) Schelldorf, Jerry (Awanda) Howell, Richard (Diane) Howell, Eleanor (Vic) Maudsley, Sharon Carpenter, and Karen (Ken) Chronister; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a lifelong member of Mt. Olive Missionary Church in Peoria, when she moved to Bloomington-Normal she attended College Park Christian Church in Normal.

Elaine was a kind and gentle person whose faith and family were very important to her. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, and on her 90th birthday she saw her beloved baseball team win the World Series.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at College Park Christian Church in Normal, IL with Pastor Brent Salm officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service on Wednesday, May 2, at the church. Burial will take place at the Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Evergreen Village in Normal for their loving and compassionate care for Mom.
